Is a graphics card with 512mb of memory better than one with 256mb of memory? Which is better for gaming?

whats better: a nvidia 8600gs 512mb or a nvidia 8600gt 256mb? which is better for gaming? Also please tell me which one would do better playing games like crysis, doom 3, quake 4, and UT3.
