Synonym for "lose his cool"?

I'm writing a reflective essay for the book: To Kill a Mockingbird, and I am (for those of you who read it) talking about when Jem goes crazy on Ms. Dubose's yard. I want to say: Jem loses his cool and attacks Ms. Dubose yard, but i dont know how to say "loses his cool" in a more academically enhanced way.
