How is common day Russian?

well I have heard from two of my my ex's, they are Russian, what Russia is like although neither have ever lied to me I would like to hear from other what it's like there. from someone who either lives in Russia or has been to Russia. naturally being American I hear mostly slander and bull crap so I wish to find out the truth about Russia.
